Fair warning: On Sundays I tend to share on the spiritual aspect of rebooting yourself. Today is Pentecost Sunday, the day that fulfills the promise of Jesus that he would send a helper. Let’s talk about helpers.
Have you ever tried to make a big change in your life—break a habit, start something new, or walk away from something that no longer serves you—and found yourself running out of steam halfway through? You’re not alone. Change is hard. It takes effort, energy, and more often than we admit, a little help.
There’s something deeply powerful about having a helper—a person, a practice, or even a spiritual presence—that walks with you through transformation. In fact, this isn’t just a good idea; it’s a deeply biblical one. In the Christian tradition, Pentecost celebrates the moment when Jesus’ followers received the Holy Spirit—the ultimate Helper.
You weren’t meant to do this alone
Whether you’re trying to stop overthinking, heal from old wounds, or step into a new chapter of life, the journey isn’t meant to be solo. In John 14:16, Jesus says, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.” This Helper—the Holy Spirit—wasn’t just for comfort. He was sent to guide, remind, strengthen, and walk with believers through change and challenge. If Jesus knew that was important for his follower– it’s true for you whether you are part of Christianity or not– you were meant to have help when you are tackling the deeper things of life.
The presence of a helper reduces “overwhelmed”
When you’re trying to change something, the mental and emotional load can feel enormous. A helper—whether spiritual or human—reminds you that you don’t have to carry the whole weight yourself. Sometimes it’s a friend who listens, a therapist who guides, or a mentor who checks in. And sometimes, it’s the still, small voice of God reminding you that you’re not in this alone.
Strength multiplies in community
One of the most frustrating parts of personal transformation is confusion. Where do I start? Am I doing this right? Should I keep going? A helper brings clarity. The Holy Spirit is described in Scripture as a guide into all truth (John 16:13). In other words, He helps cut through the noise and bring focus to what really matters. Maybe you have a friend that is good at this– find them, and humble yourself and ask for their intentional input for a season. When you’re tired, someone else’s strength can lift you. When you feel lost, a helper can point the way. That’s true in both practical and spiritual ways. Just like the Holy Spirit empowers believers not just with comfort, but with courage, direction, and the ability to keep going when you want to quit– that is what a helper can do.
Ask for help—it’s a sign of strength
In our culture, we often glorify the idea of doing it all ourselves. But true transformation often begins with the humility to say, “I need help.” Whether that’s through prayer, reaching out to a trusted friend, or simply allowing yourself to lean on God or others more deeply—asking for help is not weakness. It’s wisdom.
Practical ways to invite the Helper in
- If you are inclined to such things, begin your day with a simple prayer: “Holy Spirit, help me today.”
- When you feel stuck, pause and ask: “What do I need right now?”
- Journal your thoughts and listen for the gentle nudges of clarity.
- Invite safe people into your process—those who reflect on grace and truth.
Transformation is not a solo sport. Whether you’re facing a big life change or working on a quiet internal shift, you don’t have to go it alone. Help is not only available—it’s offered by friends and promised by the Divine. And sometimes, the wisest thing you can do is reach for it.
